Editor-in-Chief

Karen Bernstein, Ph.D.

Karen is the internationally recognized Cofounder, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief of BioCentury. She has been writing and publishing on biotechnology since 1987 and has received industry and medical honors for her contributions to biotechnology and medical innovation. Karen, who is a member of the Brandeis University Sciences Advisory Council, holds a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University, and a B.A. in politics and history from Brandeis.

Executive Editors

Gaspar Taroncher-Oldenburg, Ph.D.

Gaspar, who serves as Executive Editor of SciBX for NPG, was previously a scientific editor of Nature Biotechnology for five years. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and a first degree in biology from the Universidad Autónoma in Madrid. Prior to joining Nature Biotechnology, Gaspar conducted research and taught at Princeton University, MIT and Tufts University.
 

Steve Edelson

Steve, who serves as Executive Editor of SciBX for BioCentury, has been a writer and editor for BioCentury since 1998, including as Editor of BioCentury Extra and as Senior Writer responsible for financial markets coverage. Steve has a M.S. in biotechnology from Northwestern University, where he also received a B.A. in biochemistry.

Susan Schaeffer

Susan serves as Managing Editor of BioCentury, the Bernstein Report on BioBusiness and the BioCentury Extra daily newspaper. She joined BioCentury in 2003 after 10 years as a writer and editor in the consumer packaged goods sector, most recently at international strategy consultant Kurt Salmon Associates.
 

Tracey Baas, Ph.D.

Tracey, who serves as Associate Editor of SciBX for NPG, has spent the past 12 years conducting research in areas ranging from surface bio-organic chemistry to virus-host functional genomics. She is a graduate of University of Wisconsin, Madison, and holds a Ph.D. from University of Washington, Seattle. Tracey has previous editorial experience working for other journals, including Review of Modern Physics.

Market Research

Walter Yang

Walter, who serves as the Research Director of SciBX, has been a writer, research analyst and research director at BioCentury. Prior to joining BioCentury in 1999, Walter worked as a researcher at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He holds a B.S. in molecular biology from the University of California, San Diego, and has a Master's degree in accounting and finance from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Steve Usdin

Steve has been BioCentury's Washington Editor for 15 years, covering regulatory, political and policy issues affecting the life sciences sector. He also is the senior editor responsible for coverage of social issues involving biotechnology. Steve's reporting about biotechnology and biomedical policy has been cited in The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, New Scientist and other publicationss.
 

Michael J. Haas

Mike, who serves as a Senior Writer at BioCentury, has nearly 14 years of experience as an analytical chemist and mass spectrometry group leader at DuPont, DuPont Merck, DuPont Pharma and Bristol-Myers Squibb. He holds a M.Sc. in chemistry from the University of Toronto and a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Delaware.
 

Tim Fulmer, Ph.D.

Tim, who serves as a Staff Writer at BioCentury, has 10 years of experience as a technical translator and writer, most recently in the Kyrgyz Republic and Russia. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Illinois and a B.S. in chemistry and biology from Indiana University.
 

Aaron Bouchie

Aaron, who serves as a Senior Writer at BioCentury, has spent the past eight years analyzing and reporting on the biotech industry. He spent more than four years as a news editor at Nature Biotechnology, and before joining BioCentury worked in the patenting and licensing office of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Aaron has a B.A. in biology from Cornell University.
 

Lev Osherovich, Ph.D.

Lev is an Academic in Residence and Senior Writer at BioCentury. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco. Lev joins the team during a sabbatical from a Burroughs Wellcome Fund fellowship.
 

Kai-Jye Lou

Kai-Jye, who serves as a Staff Writer at BioCentury, holds an M.S. in biomedical engineering and a B.S in computational and systems biology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Kai-Jye's past research projects have focused on control algorithms to stabilize cardiac alternans as well as pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modeling.
 

Brian Moy

Brian, a Staff Writer at BioCentury, previously served as a Research Analyst for the company. He has a B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame.
 

Lauren Martz

Lauren, a Staff Writer at BioCentury, previously served as a Research Analyst for the company. She holds a B.S.E. in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
